How to Care for Delicate Fabrics

How to Care for Delicate Fabrics

June 01, 2025 • 5 min read • By Pamala Styles

Delicate fabrics like silk, chiffon, wool, and lace make some of the most beautiful pieces in your wardrobe — but they also require special care. Here is how to keep them looking their best for years to come.

Silk

Silk is luxurious but sensitive. Hand wash in cool water with a gentle detergent made for delicates. Never wring or twist silk — instead, roll it in a clean towel to remove excess water. Hang to dry away from direct sunlight. If ironing is needed, use the lowest setting and iron on the reverse side while the fabric is slightly damp.

Chiffon

Chiffon is lightweight and prone to snagging. Hand wash in cool water with mild detergent. Avoid twisting or wringing. Lay flat to dry on a clean towel. Store chiffon garments hanging to prevent creasing.

Wool

Wool should be hand washed in cool water with a wool-specific detergent. Never use hot water, as it causes shrinkage. Lay flat to dry on a towel, reshaping the garment while damp. Never hang wet wool, as it will stretch out of shape. Store wool folded with cedar blocks to deter moths.

Lace

Lace is delicate and can tear easily. Hand wash in cool water with gentle detergent. Place lace items in a mesh laundry bag if machine washing on the delicate cycle. Lay flat to dry and store folded between layers of acid-free tissue paper.

General Tips for All Delicates

When to Dry Clean

Some fabrics and constructions are best left to professionals. Structured garments, beaded or sequined pieces, and anything with a "dry clean only" label should be taken to a reputable cleaner. The cost is worth preserving the garment.

With proper care, your delicate pieces will stay beautiful season after season. Shop our collections for quality pieces worth caring for.
